Mechanics. Distance comes off you. Not coldness, but distance: people feel that they must approach carefully, and in a noisy company you are noticed last, but then remembered longer than the rest. You look like someone who has understood something, and nothing can be done about it: even when you are silent simply because you are tired, people read depth into it and come with questions they would not dare ask others. You give your opinion rarely and exactly. There is no idle chatter in you at all, and that reads as reliability.

Works when expertise requiring long solitary work is needed: research, editing, a craft, diagnostics, any job where you have to get to the bottom and nobody can help. You do not tire of yourself. That is a rare skill, and it gives a head start: while others look for company so as not to sit in silence, in the same six months you read everything on the subject and become the one people come to when all other ways have run out.

Breaks when distance turns into a wall. Declining one invitation drags a second and a third after it, the circle narrows to two people, then to one, and then one Saturday it turns out there is nobody to call and, it seems, there has not been for a long time. The second failure is intellectual: you stew in your own conclusions, there is nobody to check them with, and any mistake lives in you for years without any resistance. From outside it looks like firmness, from inside it feels like being right, and in fact it means the last person able to contradict you left your life some five years ago.

• A birthday invitation brings not joy but arithmetic: how many people will be there and at what time it is decent to leave.
• Friends say they never see you, and by your feeling about three weeks have passed. Eight months have passed.
• You give advice once. If it is not heeded, you will not repeat it.

What to do.

1. Keep two living connections as a routine, not as a mood: a call in the calendar every two weeks works better than promises.
2. Test your conclusions aloud on at least one person.
3. Tell solitude from escape: after the first you have strength, after the second you feel empty.
