The High Priestess in the centre of the Matrix of Destiny

Mechanics. An observer sits at the centre. You walk into a room and the first thing you do is read it: who is tense with whom, who is lying, who feels awkward, who is about to speak loudest because they are afraid of being interrupted. You say little. That is exactly what creates the effect of depth: people complete the picture themselves, usually in their own favour, crediting you with an understanding you never claimed. They bring you secrets by the second meeting. You do not ask. People simply tell things when they are near you, and then wonder why. You do rather little: you watch and you do not interrupt. People get interrupted everywhere and always, so that alone is enough.

Works when composure is needed: negotiations where you cannot hurry, work with other people's pain, expertise where saying too much would be a mistake. Your pause weighs more than someone else's monologue, and in that pause people reach the right conclusion on their own, then consider it theirs, which is the only way to change the mind of an adult who actually has a job. You get it for free.

Breaks when silence stops being a choice and turns into a habit. Then you are read as cold, and the people close to you live in guesswork: is it hurt or tiredness, against me or just indifferent? The second failure is knowing instead of acting. You see the situation through, you work out the outcome six months ahead, you do not step in, and then you watch it all happen exactly as you predicted, and you are angry, most often at yourself, because you could have warned them.

What it looks like:

What to do.

  1. The one-sentence rule: if you notice something important about a person, tell them the same day. Briefly, no lecture.
  2. Tell silence as a choice apart from silence as fear. The first gives you strength, the second builds resentment.
  3. Once a week, tell someone close something about yourself rather than about them.

Takeaway: you are read as the one who sees through people; the price of the gift is loneliness, unless you open your mouth.
