Mechanics. Light and hope come off you, and even strangers read it: with you one wants to share a dream, because you do not laugh. People nearby begin to believe they can do it, and often it is after a talk with you that they do what they had been putting off for years. You look younger than your age. There is a clarity in you that life somehow has not worn away, and those around protect it by instinct, trying not to be cynical near you. They rarely ask you for advice. They ask for your presence.

Works when you need to inspire and hold a distant horizon: creative work, teaching, charity, medicine, any task where a person must be given back faith in themselves. Your presence heals without any technique. You build ten-year plans easily, and the most surprising thing is that they come true more often than the practical ones. It is not a miracle: you simply do not drop the direction while others revise their goals every spring, and in ten years you cover a distance that seemed invented.

Breaks when the light stays only outside. Everyone feels good near you, and you feel good with nobody, because complaining is not part of your role, and you keep a straight face even in the month when everything falls apart, and then wonder why nobody noticed. The second failure is a dream instead of a step. A beautiful picture of the future lives for years, and the first action is still not taken. A dream is convenient because it cannot be failed: until it is begun, it is perfect, and giving up that feeling for a crooked first step is not appealing at all.

• People come to you to talk it out and leave with wings, and you stay sitting with their story and your own, which you did not tell.
• Your plans are admired, and the date of fulfilment keeps shifting to next year.
• People say "you are such a bright person", and there is a little less in it than you would like.

1. Once a month, complain aloud to a specific person. In plain words, without a smile.
2. Break the dream into an action for this week. One, small, with a date.
3. Check whom you shine for. Some need your light, not you.
