Lesson 1 of 12
The Map, Not the Forecast
Most beginners ask 'what will happen?' — this lesson shows you why 'what is going on' is the real question.
Imagine you are holding a map. A map does not tell you that you will fall into a river or that you will find gold on the next hill. It shows you the terrain: where the roads curve, where the ground rises, where the river runs fast. A tarot deck works the same way. It does not predict a fixed future. Instead, it draws a picture of the forces, feelings, and patterns already moving through your life at this moment. That is why the question "What will happen?" often leads to confusion and disappointment, while "What is going on?" opens a door to understanding.
Take one of the most misunderstood cards: The Tower. If you pull The Tower in a reading, many beginners panic, thinking a disaster is coming. But look at the card itself. A lightning bolt strikes a crown atop a tower. Two figures fall. The tower is built on a false foundation — the crown symbolizes a belief that you are safe and in control. The lightning is not evil; it is truth. What collapses is not your life, but a structure that was never real. The card describes a state: something you built on a lie is breaking. The movement is toward honesty, however painful. That is not a prediction of an accident. It is a description of where you are now and what is happening beneath the surface.
Another example: The Sun. This card shows a child riding a white horse under a bright sun, with sunflowers in the background. Beginners often read it as "good luck is coming." But The Sun, as a state, describes a moment of clarity, vitality, and simplicity. It says: right now, you see things clearly. You are aligned with your own joy. The movement is toward openness and expression. If you ask "will I get the job?" and pull The Sun, the card does not say yes. It says the state you are in right now is one of confidence and visibility. That is what you bring to the situation. The future is not fixed — but your present energy is bright.
Tarot is a language for describing a state and a movement. Every card has its own element, number, and place in the Fool's journey. The Fool himself starts as the zero — pure potential, no prediction. Then he meets the Magician (active creation), the High Priestess (inner knowing), and so on. Each card is a snapshot of a moment in that journey. When you read for yourself, you are not asking "what is destined." You are asking "what is true right now, and where is it moving?" That is why the most powerful reading often comes from a simple question: "What do I need to see about this situation?" The cards then show you the map. Your job is to read it, not to treat it as a fortune cookie.
Try this: instead of "Will my partner leave me?" ask "What is the state of this relationship right now?" Instead of "Will I be rich?" ask "What is my relationship with money at this moment?" The answers will be different — not a yes or no, but a description. And a description gives you choices. Events are not written. But your state is always present, and tarot can illuminate it.
Practice
Take any card from your deck without looking — just one. Turn it over. Study the image for thirty seconds. Then, in one sentence, describe what that card says about a situation in your life right now, using only the present tense. No 'will' or 'won't'. Just 'this is what is.'
